Overweight in kids by HealthyLifeNow

Overweight Kids

Being overweight or obese is no longer just a concern for adults any longer. Studies conducted on children in different countries have come up with alarming results. In the United States alone, one in three children are now considered overweight or obese. Many reasons have been cited for this growing concern. Children prefer to spend their play time with video games than in the park, more time is spent watching television with snacks at hand, and eating ready made meals instead of wholesome food is now a common sight.

Obesity brings with it the risk of other diseases and illnesses such as Type II diabetes, osteoporosis, liver diseases, bone and joint problems, high blood pressure and cholesterol problems. Doctors are alarmed that illnesses which were associated with old age are now increasingly being seen in children as young as ten or eleven. On the other hand, studies reveal that obese kids are often the most bullied at school, and this may in turn lead to other eating disorders such as bulimia and anorexia. Pediatricians are now encouraging parents to take steps to ensure that their children stay healthy. It has been observed that if one parent is obese or overweight it is likely that the children too may have weight problems. Reducing the television viewing time to no more than two hours, and increasing physical activity to at least one hour on a daily basis is a good way to begin. Encouraging youngsters to have more fruits and vegetables, while cutting down on sugar and eating smaller portions is a must. Talking to children about a healthy lifestyle and educating them about various illnesses is important.
